GENDATA.DOC - 6/1/93 - by Christopher E. Long
Fidonet is the largest amature Bulletin Board System (BBS) network in the
world. Currently, it has over 23,000 computer systems participating, and
it is growing at an incredible rate. On Fidonet are hundreds of different
Echoes. An Echo is a message area that is shared with other systems. If
you leave a message in an echo, a copy of your message is sent to every
system in the network that participates in that particular echo.
One such echo is the Genealogy Database conference, which is more commonly
known as GenData. The only messages that are allowed in GenData are Tiny
Tafels. By entering your TT as a message in this echo, it will quickly be
seen by a very large number of people.
The TT's in GenData are compiled into large text files of approximately
one hundred TT's each. These files are then distributed via the Genealogy
Software Distribution System (GSDS). GSDS is an international file
distribution network. It is much like an echo except that files are sent
instead of messages. The Tiny Tafel Editor can read these text files to
perform matching reports. Currently, there are several of these files
containing over 1200 TT's total.
The home of GenData is Ancestry TBBS, operated by John Grove. There you
will find the GenData echo collections and files from all GSDS areas. Set
your modem to 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, and no parity, and call
1-813-382-9061. Bps rates up to 14,400 (HST) are supported. A second
line is 1-813-471-0552, with bps rates up to 14,400 (HST and v.32bis). If
the first line is busy, your call will wrap to the second line. (Fidonet
address 1:18/230)
Visionary Endeavors BBS, the home of the Tiny Tafel Editor, is a part of
Fidonet and carries the GenData echo as well as some areas of GSDS. All
of the GenData echo collections are available on it for download. No fees
are charged for using Visionary Endeavors. Set your modem to 8 data bits,
1 stop bit, no parity and call 1-904-249-9515. Supported modem rates are
1200 to 16,800 bps (HST and v.32bis). (Fidonet address 1:112/10)
For your reference, a copy of the GenData echo rules follows...
The Genealogy Database conference is designed to make
available to all genealogists, a public forum for transmission of
Tiny Tafel information. It is NOT a matching system of any
kind. The reader of this area may make use of its contents
for his or her own research only.
The rules are very simple:
1: TINY TAFELS ONLY. NO OTHER
MESSAGES OF ANY KIND ARE ALLOWED.
2: DO NOT USE THIS AREA AS A QUERY SYSTEM.
3. DO NOT RESPOND TO TT MESSAGES IN THIS AREA.
4. Please enter your research as often as
you like. Keep it up to date and your
chances of finding another person doing
work in your area is greatly improved.
5. On a technical note: NO ASCII CHARACTERS
ABOVE 127 are allowed in this area.
